What is the Job Seeking Visa?

How do I get a job seeker visa for Spain? In 2018, the Spanish Government created the Job Seeking Visa to aid students who have previously completed their higher education studies in Spain to regularize their situation while searching for employment.

This visa serves as an intermediary that can be applied for after a student visa expires, and later, upon receiving a job offer, converted into a working permit. The visa has a maximum duration of 24 months.

  • Be a citizen of a country outside the European Union, European Economic Zone, and Switzerland.
  • Currently possess a student visa.
  • Have completed a minimum of level 6 (Bachelor’s degree or higher) studies from an accredited Spanish institution.

Additionally, the applicant must:

  • Have sufficient economic means to sustain their residency in Spain while on the visa. This requires the applicant to demonstrate means of at least 100% the IPREM. (2023 IPREM €600 per month).
  • In the case of family members, additional financial means must be demonstrated in the required amount of 75% IPREM for the first family member and then 50% IPREM for each additional one.
  • Obtain medical insurance through a provider authorized by the Spanish government.
  • Not have a prior criminal record in Spain nor in their previous country/countries of residence.
  • Not be prohibited from entering Spain nor any other Schengen member States.
  • Be free from any diseases that pose a threat to public health.

 

What documents are required for the Job Seeking Visa?

What documents are required for the Job Seeking Visa or Employment Seeking Residency Permit?? The following documents are required to apply for the Job Seeking Visa in most cases. It is important to know that the administrative authorities may request additional documents, depending on the case.

  • Valid passport (with minimum 12 months validity).
  • Proof of financial means. The amounts required can be found in the previous section.
  • Proof of completed studies. In case the degree is in process, a certificate may be presented.
  • Proof of medical insurance.
  • If the student visa was valid for less than 6 months, the applicant must also present:
  • Medical certificate.
  • Background check from past country/countries of residence during the previous 5 years.

Documents issued by foreign authorities need to be translated / legalized before being submitted in Spain. This legalization means obtaining the apostille of the Hague Convention (when applicable). In turn, all documentation that is not in Spanish must be translated by a sworn translator authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

 

How to apply for the Job Seeking Visa?

The visa application must be submitted between 60 calendar days before and 90 calendar days after the expiration of the current student visa. The request will be processed within 20 days, starting the day after the request is submitted. If no response is received, the applicant should understand this to mean the request has been accepted.

Within one month of receiving the approval, the applicant must solicit their foreigner identification card (TIE- Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjeros).
