What is the Portuguese Non-Lucrative Visa & Residence?

The Portuguese Non-Lucrative Residence Visa also known as D7 visa or non-profit visa, the non-profit visa is a residence permit in Portugal for foreign citizens not belonging to the EU, EEA or Switzerland. It has a low cost, as long as they have sufficient income to support themselves during their stay in the country.

What are the main requirements for acquiring the  Portuguese Non-Lucrative Visa & Residence?

Minimum Stay

Minimum stay in the country of six consecutive months or eight non-consecutive months per year.

Proof of financial means

Proof of sufficient financial means to support oneself and one's family members in Portugal, either through savings or monthly income

Place of residence

Proof of accommodation or place of residence in Portugal.

What is the procedure for acquiring the Portuguese Non-Lucrative Visa & Residence?

1 D7 Visa

Initially, the D7 Visa must be obtained, which must be done in the applicant's country of origin. It grants the right to stay in Portugal For 120 days but does not confer the right to work. The Consulate or Embassy has 60 days to resolve the application.

2 Interview with SEF

Secondly, once in Portuguese territory, the applicant must attend an interview with the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF). There, the documentation required by law must be presented. The SEF has 4 months to resolve the application.

3 Residence Card

Finally, if the Non-Profit Visa is approved, a residence car valid for 2 years will be issued, which can be renewed for an equal period.
