Golden Visa: Closing a Chapter, Keeping Our Commitment

On April 8, 2024, the Spanish Government officially announced the elimination of the investor residency regime, known as the Golden Visa. For over a decade, this visa allowed non-EU citizens to obtain Spanish residency through significant investments, mainly in real estate.

With this decision, a key tool comes to an end—one that attracted foreign capital, boosted the real estate market, and positioned Spain as a prime destination for high-net-worth individuals. The Golden Visa in Spain was the preferred route for those looking to settle in the country securely, long-term, and with free movement across the Schengen area.

What Happens to Ongoing Applications?

Despite its elimination, two key points remain in place for those already in process:

  • Applications submitted before the reform will continue as usual.

  • Renewals of existing permits can still be processed under the current legal framework.

What Are the Current Alternatives to Spain`s Golden Visa?

Although new applications under this scheme are no longer possible, Spain continues to offer several legal residency options, each tailored to different profiles. Here are the most relevant ones:

1. Highly Qualified Professional Visa (PAC)

For foreign employees hired by Spanish companies in technical, executive, or specialized roles. Ideal for multinationals, startups, or R&D centers.

2. Entrepreneur Visa

Designed for individuals looking to launch an innovative business in Spain with economic, social, or technological impact. The business plan must be approved by ENISA or another competent authority.

3. Digital Nomad Visa

An increasingly popular option for remote workers providing services to foreign companies. Allows residency in Spain for up to 3 years, with the option to extend. Perfect for combining work and lifestyle.

4. Non-Lucrative Visa

For individuals with sufficient financial means to live in Spain without working. Popular among retirees or those with passive income seeking a lifestyle change.

5. Intra-Company Transfer Visa (ICT)

Allows international companies to relocate employees to their Spanish branch. Valid for executives and highly trained staff.

6. Family Reunification and Other Personal Options

Includes permits for spouses, children, and ascendants of legal residents, as well as other options based on family ties, legal status, or special circumstances.
